But if you want an incredibly over-engineered two-row SUV that can tow 7,000 pounds, tackle all but the most extreme off road environments, whisk you 500 miles at 75 mph without fatigue and get 29 mpg highway in the process, the Touareg might be your SUV. The diesel has the immense torque to tow and confidently merge onto the highway. The eight-speed is essentially seamless in fully automatic operation, but one or two trials with the manual mode are likely to be enough for most owners. But the diesel is the fuel-economy champ, according to the EPA, at 20 mpg city and 29 highway (we averaged 27 mpg in the TDI driven for this review). It drives the same as before the fix, mileage goes down by 1 mpg but it gets a longer warranty. I would opt for the diesel for better mileage.
